Therapeutics Discovery Staff Scientist (Virology)

Location: Ft Detrick, Maryland, United States; onsite laboratory work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 environments

What you will do

• Design, coordinate, and conduct in vitro and in vivo studies evaluating vaccines, therapeutics, and other medical countermeasures.
• Investigate infectious disease pathogenesis using cell culture, microphysiological systems, molecular biology, virology, and immunological assays.
• Support up to ten small-animal studies annually, including protocols, dosing, virus challenge, monitoring, necropsy, sample processing, analysis, and reporting.
• Conduct research in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories and safeguard biological select agents, toxins, animal tissues, and working stocks.
• Prepare technical reports, research proposals, manuscripts, presentations, and monthly Principal Investigator reports.
• Mentor junior staff, coordinate multidisciplinary research, support laboratory inspections, and supervise assigned BSL-2 laboratory suites.

Requirements

• PhD in Biomedical Science, Microbiology, Virology, or a closely related life-science discipline.
• At least three years of related post-degree laboratory experience and demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
• Experience designing immunogenicity and basic virology studies and assessing cellular and humoral immune responses.
• Experience with infectious agents, small-animal studies, immunological techniques, molecular biology, virology, and cell culture.
• Ability to work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories and handle controlled substances.
• Must obtain and maintain Biological Personnel Reliability Program and Controlled Substances Personnel Reliability Program enrollment; background and drug screening are required.

Nice to have

• Experience evaluating vaccines, therapeutics, or other medical countermeasure candidates.
• Experience with ELISA, flow cytometry, ELISPOT, plaque assays, PRNT, high-content imaging, and advanced molecular biology methods.
• Experience preparing animal and study protocols, research proposals, manuscripts, and sponsor-facing technical reports.
• Experience mentoring scientific staff or supervising high-containment laboratory suites.
• Experience with GFEBS or DMLSS ordering systems and laboratory inspection readiness.
