Tooling Engineer (Welding)

Location: On-site at the weld development facility in Los Angeles, California, United States

Salary: $115,000–$170,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Design weld fixtures and tooling, including locating and clamping fixtures, positioner tooling, and purge, backing, and chill tooling.
• Take tooling from concept and 3D CAD through detailed drawings, fabrication, prove-out, verification, and production release.
• Validate designs with FEA and hand calculations for load, stiffness, and thermal effects during welding.
• Coordinate fabrication with internal shops and external vendors.
• Work with welding engineers and welders to control distortion, improve fit-up, and make tooling safe and practical to use.
• Design and adapt tooling for robotic welding cells, positioners, sensors, and pneumatic clamping.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Welding Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience, with 4+ years designing tooling in manufacturing.
• Experience designing weld fixtures or tooling and taking tools from CAD into production.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD such as SolidWorks, NX, or CATIA, GD&T, and FEA or static analysis.
• Working knowledge of welding processes, weld distortion, and tooling materials exposed to high heat and loads.
• Experience with robotic or automated weld cells, positioners, sensors, and pneumatic clamping.
• Must satisfy U.S. Government export-control requirements, including ITAR eligibility, by being a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice to have

• Experience with large or complex welded structures in aerospace, defense, or shipbuilding.
• Experience with modular or reconfigurable fixturing systems for multiple part variants.
• Hands-on welding or machining skills.
• Familiarity with AS9100, NAVSEA, AWS requirements, CMM inspection, or laser tracker inspection.
