TL;DR
Upstream Process Development Associate I/II (Biotechnology): Developing mammalian cell culture and harvest processes for CHO cell lines to support process development, scale-up, and technology transfer to cGMP manufacturing with an accent on bioreactor operation, process analysis, and technical documentation. Focus on calculating growth and productivity metrics, scaling agitation and gassing parameters, analyzing DOE data, and transferring processes to manufacturing.

Location: USA - NC - Durham - Emperor Blvd

Salary: $50,000–$70,000 per year, plus an annual bonus structure. Weekend and holiday hours are compensated at a premium.

What you will do

  • Set up, operate, and analyze mammalian cell culture and bioreactor processes from shake flasks through 200 L single-use bioreactors.
  • Lead and monitor process development experiments, including inoculation, sampling, feeding, process calculations, and scale-up or scale-down of agitation and gassing.
  • Enter, plot, and analyze experimental data; prepare presentations and technical reports using Microsoft Office.
  • Maintain batch sheets, data binders, project plans, raw-material records, and equipment availability in line with good documentation practices.
  • Support DOE and statistical analysis using Design-Expert and JMP, as well as process transfer to manufacturing.
  • Participate in client-facing process development teams, present data, respond to queries, and coach junior colleagues on cell culture techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 1–3+ years of experience or a master’s degree with 2+ years of experience in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of mammalian cell culture, particularly CHO cell lines.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while meeting strict client deadlines.
  • Flexibility to support cell culture processes on weekends and holidays, typically 2–4 weekend days per month.
