Lead Data Engineer (Databricks)

Location: Remote applicants must reside in Virginia, North Carolina, Washington DC, or Maryland. Applicants within 50 miles of the Richmond or Lynchburg offices must work hybrid in-office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary: $120,900–$187,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Lead 3–4 data engineering build teams through technical direction, coaching, mentoring, and governance.
• Design and build reusable coding frameworks, proof-of-concept solutions, and shared data assets.
• Establish engineering, design, coding, code review, and delivery standards across teams.
• Lead CI/CD improvements and develop reusable data tests for future releases.
• Drive Spark performance optimization, Databricks feature adoption, and platform cost optimization.
• Oversee production monitoring, troubleshooting, defect resolution, and the full software development lifecycle.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of hands-on Databricks experience.
• Proven Tech Lead experience leading developers and decomposing and distributing work.
• Experience with data governance, reporting and dashboards, source systems, analytics, data warehousing, and modern data engineering.
• Experience working in Agile frameworks and writing high-quality user stories.
• Strong communication, mentoring, stakeholder alignment, and ambiguity-management skills.
• This role is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

• Azure and Microsoft Fabric experience.
• Insurance industry business process and data knowledge.
• Medical data experience.
• Familiarity with data governance and data quality requirements for business consumers.
