Principal Research Scientist, Analytical Chemistry (Oncology)

Location: South San Francisco, California, United States; onsite four days per week, with work-from-home flexibility.

Salary: $167,000–$206,000 per year, plus eligibility for merit-based increases, short-term incentives, and stock options.

What you will do

• Oversee small-molecule analytical chemistry activities across the discovery portfolio.
• Manage and execute compound purification, including HPLC and chiral SFC separations, structural elucidation, physicochemical property testing, and stability studies.
• Develop, validate, troubleshoot, and maintain fit-for-purpose analytical methods.
• Manage analytical laboratory equipment and oversee analytical work performed by external CROs, including vendor selection.
• Partner with medicinal chemistry and cross-functional teams to align analytical strategy with discovery goals.
• Mentor junior analytical chemists and support hiring and growth of the analytical department.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or a related discipline.
• At least five years of pharmaceutical drug discovery experience in cross-functional environments.
• Strong expertise in small-molecule purification using HPLC and SFC, physicochemical analysis, analytical method development and validation, and CRO management.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and multitasking skills.
• Experience supervising and mentoring junior associates or scientists.
• Ability to work onsite at the South San Francisco headquarters four days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with small-molecule structural elucidation techniques.
• Knowledge of emerging analytical chemistry techniques and technologies.
