Senior Data Engineering Manager

Location: Hybrid, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office in Dorking or Basingstoke, UK; option for 1 day per week in London

What you will do

• Lead, coach and develop a team of Data Engineers.
• Set engineering standards for coding, testing, observability, documentation and data quality.
• Design and deliver scalable cloud and hybrid data platforms, pipelines and engineering tools.
• Modernise the data estate by reducing technical debt and migrating from legacy technologies to strategic platforms.
• Own end-to-end delivery, including timelines, resources, risks, quality and vendor relationships.
• Partner with Architecture, Product, Governance, Data Science and Insights teams to deliver secure, reliable and compliant data solutions.

Requirements

• Proven experience building modern data platforms and pipelines from the ground up.
• Experience transforming legacy or on-premises environments into modern cloud or hybrid architectures.
• Deep expertise in Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Synapse Analytics, SQL, Databricks, Azure Data Factory or Microsoft Fabric, Event Hub, Kafka, Azure Functions, Key Vault and Microsoft Purview.
• Strong knowledge of storage and compute patterns, batch and streaming architectures, orchestration, APIs, schema design, performance optimisation and reliability engineering.
• Experience leading engineering teams and developing technical capability.
• Strong understanding of data governance, privacy, lineage and data quality frameworks, including technical debt remediation.
