Graduate Engineer (5G NR-NTN)

Location: Espoo, Finland; hybrid work with onsite attendance three days per week

What you will do

• Write and maintain C++ software for 5G NR-NTN upper-layer and core interface protocols, including PDCP, eGTP-U/C, XnAP, and NGAP.
• Implement NTN-specific PDCP adaptations for long propagation delays, extended sequence numbers, reordering, lossless handover, and status reporting.
• Develop and validate N3 user-plane tunnelling, Xn procedures, and N2 signalling procedures.
• Build test cases, simulation harnesses, and automation against 3GPP specifications.
• Support Core Network and mobile network operator integrations across AMF implementations and disaggregated vRAN components.
• Debug protocol issues with packet captures and analysis tools, participate in code reviews, and contribute to technical documentation.

Requirements

• Strong C++ programming ability, including non-trivial development experience, memory management, pointers and references, and the standard library.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Wireless Communications, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including IP, UDP/TCP, tunnelling, protocol stacks, and packet-based signalling.
• Familiarity with 5G or LTE architecture, including RAN and core networks, control and user planes, and handover procedures.
• Comfort working with Linux and Git, plus persistence in debugging packet-level issues and translating 3GPP specifications into code.
• Clear communication and willingness to learn from experienced protocol engineers.

Nice to have

• Internship, thesis, research, or open-source experience in telecom protocols, core networks, RAN, or projects such as srsRAN, OpenAirInterface, Open5GS, or free5GC.
• Exposure to PDCP, GTP tunnelling, 5G N2/N3 interfaces, AMF/UPF roles, ASN.1, message encoding, or state-machine design.
• Experience with Wireshark, tcpdump, Python test automation, multithreaded software, or satellite communications.
