TL;DR
Senior Firmware Engineer (FPGA) (Medical Devices) (VHDL/SystemVerilog): Developing FPGA-based firmware for advanced ophthalmic surgical systems with an accent on deterministic video processing pipelines, control logic, and hardware-firmware integration. Focus on designing timing-critical functions, executing verification and validation, and supporting compliant medical device development.

Location: Erlangen, Germany; residence within commuting distance or willingness to relocate to Germany is required.

What you will do

  • Develop FPGA firmware architecture, requirements, and technical designs for ophthalmic surgical systems.
  • Design and implement FPGA firmware in VHDL and/or SystemVerilog, including deterministic video processing pipelines and control logic.
  • Support hardware-firmware integration, system-level debugging, and cross-functional engineering collaboration.
  • Define and execute firmware verification and validation activities while maintaining coding standards and quality gates.
  • Support CI/CD workflows, laboratory validation, AI-enabled engineering processes, and continuous improvement within medical device lifecycle standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
  • At least 6 years of FPGA or firmware development experience.
  • Fluent English and intermediate German are required.
  • Strong FPGA development expertise with VHDL/SystemVerilog and FPGA SoCs such as Xilinx.
  • Experience with hardware-firmware integration, laboratory validation, C/C++, Python, and Agile/Scrum collaboration.

Nice to have

  • Experience in regulated or safety-critical industries such as medical devices, automotive, or aerospace.
  • Familiarity with medical device firmware lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with video/image processing pipelines and high-speed interfaces such as LVDS or CoaXPress.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Hardware-in-the-Loop testing, and advanced hardware debugging.
