TL;DR
Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Private Search Quality) (ML/search ranking): Building and improving production ranking and relevance systems for private, team, and brand content with an accent on recall, result understanding, and measurable search quality. Focus on designing ranking models, integrating ElasticSearch/OpenSearch and vector search, and investigating production relevance regressions across emerging agent-driven search surfaces.

Location: Remote-friendly within Australia, with flexibility to work from home, a Canva workspace, or a mix of both. Offices and coworking spaces are available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

What you will do

  • Build, evaluate, and improve machine learning ranking models for private, team, and brand content search.
  • Drive improvements in search relevance, recall, and ranking quality, especially for enterprise users.
  • Develop intelligent result understanding, search recovery, and exact-title matching capabilities.
  • Contribute to indexing using ElasticSearch/OpenSearch, vector search, and annotation technologies.
  • Extend private and brand search quality to emerging surfaces such as agent-driven search.
  • Investigate production quality regressions, communicate technical trade-offs, and share knowledge across the team.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building and shipping machine learning systems in production.
  • Experience with search, ranking, learning to rank, or relevance systems is preferred.
  • Ability to define and improve relevance, recall, and ranking-quality metrics rather than focusing only on model accuracy.
  • Ability to own scoped projects end-to-end, from problem framing through delivery and measurable impact.
  • Strong autonomy, judgement, and comfort working with ambiguity as search surfaces and user needs evolve.
  • Applicants must be able to work remotely from within Australia.
