Agentic AI and LLM Applications Software Development Engineer, Senior (AI)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia, USA. Remote work is available, with occasional in-person work at a Booz Allen or customer facility.

Salary: $86,800–$198,000 annualized USD.

What you will do

• Design and build GRACE’s agentic workflows, including planning, memory, reasoning, tool use, and multi-agent collaboration.
• Develop the tool-calling layer and MCP client integration for discovering, invoking, composing, and monitoring tools.
• Own application-level LLM orchestration, including prompts, context management, model selection, response parsing, and token efficiency.
• Build RAG capabilities and LLM evaluation pipelines covering grounding, regression testing, safety checks, and experimentation.
• Implement tracing, logging, metrics, SLOs, fallbacks, and guardrails for reliable production behavior.
• Translate ambiguous product requirements into technical designs, ship end-to-end capabilities, collaborate across disciplines, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including building and operating production systems.
• Production experience with Python and at least one additional backend language.
• Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, plus containerization and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of backend frameworks, asynchronous patterns, distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, and software design patterns.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• Completion of Booz Allen’s required skills assessment and meeting the minimum proficiency threshold.

Nice to have

• Production experience with LLM applications, tool calling, RAG, multi-agent architectures, MCP, and context management.
• Experience building LLM evaluation and regression-testing pipelines.
• Startup or early-stage product-building experience, including 0-to-1 development.
• Experience with security-conscious engineering, responsible AI guardrails, or regulated healthcare and life sciences domains.
• Knowledge of token economics and prompt behavior across GPT, Claude, and Gemini.
