Senior Aerospace Tooling Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: San Francisco, United States; in-office five days a week is essential

What you will do

• Own the tooling strategy and fixturing architecture for airframe production, from detail parts through joined airframes.
• Design and deliver large assembly fixtures, drill jigs, trim and bond fixtures, layup tools, and shop aids for composite and metallic structures.
• Define locating and datum schemes, tolerance stack-ups, GD&T analyses, and metrology approaches for tool certification and recertification.
• Establish the tooling function, including design standards, drawing practices, tool numbering, vendors, equipment, and proof-out processes.
• Manage tooling through procurement, fabrication, installation, certification, production support, budgets, schedules, and vendor delivery.
• Lead proof-out and first-article builds, investigate tooling-related defects, mentor designers and technicians, and support transition from prototype to higher-rate production.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience designing aircraft or aerospace tooling and assembly fixturing with full lifecycle ownership.
• Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Experience with large monolithic airframe fixtures and detail tooling, including drill, trim, bond, cure, layup, and shop fixtures.
• Strong experience with composite assemblies, weldments, machined metallic structures, composite-to-metal interfaces, and determinant or full-size airframe assembly.
• Expert proficiency in an industry-standard 3D CAD system, preferably NX, including large assembly management and surfacing.
• Applied experience with GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, locating and datum strategies, laser tracker or CMM-based metrology, tooling materials, vendor management, and DFM.

Nice to have

• FEA experience for validating tool stiffness, deflection, and load paths.
• CAM programming, hands-on machining, welding, and weld fixture design experience.
• Experience with laser projection, ply pattern generation, Fibersim, Composite Workbench, or similar composite design tools.
• Aircraft or spacecraft integration, NDI, composite quality inspection, and large-structure manufacturing experience.
• Familiarity with AS9100, NADCAP, FAA/DoD requirements, and tooling library maintenance or recertification tracking.
