Staff or Senior Staff Engineer, Agentic Search (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, United States

Salary: $188,000–$270,000 annual base salary, depending on level and candidate location. Equity and bonus opportunities are also offered.

What you will do

• Own the architecture of agentic search systems that combine LLMs and retrieval to answer complex and ambiguous contract questions.
• Design benchmarks, experiments, and evaluation workflows to measure and improve search quality.
• Build content-understanding and ingestion pipelines that transform raw documents into data usable by retrieval systems.
• Set architectural and technical direction for AI systems used across the organization.
• Partner with product, applied science, and engineering leaders to deliver measurable search improvements.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building production systems, including substantial work in search, information retrieval, content understanding, or recommendation systems at scale.
• Deep experience with learned or hybrid retrieval, query understanding and NLU pipelines, or production LLM agent systems.
• Production experience with Elasticsearch or comparable search frameworks, including relevance tuning, embedding search, and reranking.
• Fluency with modern LLM APIs and multi-provider orchestration, including token budgets, tool-calling semantics, and prompt caching.
• Experience with evaluation-driven development, offline benchmarks, regression detection, and structured A/B comparisons.
• Strong technical leadership, autonomy, cross-team ownership, mentoring, and architectural decision-making skills.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with post-training algorithms and infrastructure, including supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
• Experience with content understanding or information retrieval for structured-document-heavy domains.
• Experience building RAG systems for Google Docs, PDFs, DOCX, and other document formats.
