Backend Developer (Node.js)

Location: Remote, based in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

What you will do

• Build and ship robust backend services with strong product impact.
• Scale existing capabilities and improve system performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with developers, designers, quality engineers, DevOps engineers, and product owners to deliver end-to-end platform functionality.
• Model business domains into clean and performant data structures.
• Lead technical delivery for initiatives within a domain or project.
• Coach and mentor engineers while promoting engineering excellence and shared ownership.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on experience delivering products with TypeScript and JavaScript.
• Strong backend development experience with Node.js.
• Experience designing and integrating REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
• Experience with monorepo environments, modular architectures, data modeling, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with testing practices, performance tuning, scalable design principles, and architectural trade-offs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; remote work is based in South Africa.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting Keycloak or other identity management solutions.
• Experience with Vue.js or other frontend frameworks.
• Familiarity with rendering technologies such as FFmpeg, motion graphics, and visual effects software such as After Effects.
• Experience with GitLab CI/CD, DevOps, and public cloud platforms such as GCP.
