TL;DR
Intern in Sorbent Characterization (DAC) (porous materials and adsorption testing): Evaluating and developing sorbents and sorbent structures for direct air capture through lab-based characterization, accelerated lifetime testing, and process-relevant assessments with an accent on material stability, adsorption behaviour, and reliable experimental methods. Focus on measuring unary and binary isotherms, investigating accelerated aging, and validating reproducible testing procedures.

Location: Zurich, Switzerland; hybrid setup with onsite work at least three days per week.

Salary: CHF 2,000 per month during BSc/MSc studies or CHF 2,500 per month after completing an MSc.

Company

hirify.global develops direct air capture solutions designed to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

What you will do

  • Evaluate and develop sorbents and sorbent structures for direct air capture.
  • Perform lab-based adsorption characterization, accelerated lifetime testing, and process-relevant evaluations of novel materials.
  • Investigate material stability under accelerated aging conditions that simulate long-term performance.
  • Measure unary and binary isotherms under controlled conditions to characterize sorbent behaviour.
  • Work independently on targeted packages to understand how material properties influence direct air capture performance.
  • Develop, refine, validate, troubleshoot, and document experimental methods and results for interdisciplinary development teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or current master’s studies in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience and familiarity with porous-material characterization methods such as N₂ adsorption, mercury porosimetry, or DVS.
  • Some experience with adsorption characterization, including breakthrough testing.
  • Fluent English is required.
  • Availability for a six-month internship starting preferably in October 2026 or shortly thereafter.
  • Applicants must be EU/EFTA citizens or already hold a Swiss work permit.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with CO₂ capture.
  • Knowledge of German or other languages.

Culture & Benefits

  • Six-month internship with a hybrid work setup.
  • Flexible arrangement combined with onsite collaboration at least three days per week.
  • Structured internship compensation based on Swiss market benchmarks.
  • Inclusive environment focused on valuing people from different backgrounds and experiences.
