Senior Data Scientist - Ontology (AI)

Location: Office location or remote within the USA

Salary: $128,000–$170,000 per year

What you will do

• Design and maintain canonical, source-data, and process-layer ontologies for healthcare supply-chain alignment.
• Define entity identity rules, source-to-canonical mappings, provenance, and mapping validity conditions.
• Author OWL 2 axioms, validate logical consistency with reasoners, and manage ontology lifecycles using tools such as ROBOT, ODK, and SHACL.
• Build, direct, and evaluate LLM-assisted ontology extraction and enrichment pipelines with human-in-the-loop validation.
• Translate formal ontology decisions into graph and relational store specifications, including SPARQL queries and graph schemas.
• Collaborate with data engineers, quality engineers, product managers, domain experts, and integration partners.

Requirements

• Must be based in the USA or work from a hirify.global office in the USA.
• More than four years of experience in knowledge engineering, ontology development, or a closely related formal-methods discipline.
• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining domain ontologies in Protégé or equivalent with reasoner-validated consistency.
• Fluency in OWL 2 and description logics, plus working knowledge of at least one upper ontology such as BFO.
• Experience with RDF, OWL, SPARQL and/or Cypher, data integration, schema matching, entity resolution, and ontology discovery from data.
• Experience with ontology lifecycle management, LLM-assisted knowledge extraction evaluation, and Python or similar tooling.

Nice to have

• Degree in computer science, mathematics, philosophy, information science, or a related hard-science discipline.
• Knowledge of category theory for data integration, CQL/AQL, categorical database theory, or LinkML.
• Healthcare supply-chain domain knowledge, BFO 2.0, OBO Foundry principles, or provenance models.
• Experience with production-scale graph platforms such as Stardog or Amazon Neptune.
