News Designer, West Coast

Location: Remote, based in Washington state or California; occasional night and weekend work required.

Salary: $85,100–$127,700 per year.

What you will do

• Create illustrations and apply visual hierarchy to clarify ideas and improve reader experience.
• Design story presentations and visual packages for websites, mobile experiences, newsletters, social platforms, and emerging digital products.
• Develop accessible digital storytelling approaches tailored to each platform.
• Balance speed, creativity, and editorial accuracy while meeting deadlines.
• Contribute ideas that advance visual journalism and maintain evolving visual standards across products.
• Incorporate editorial rigor and design feedback throughout production.

Requirements

• Portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual design, creative thinking, and interest in journalistic storytelling.
• Experience designing digital editorial experiences or other content-rich products.
• Strong command of typography, composition, color, and information hierarchy.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects under deadline pressure.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
• Experience with Figma or Adobe XD.

Nice to have

• Experience with After Effects.
• Experience with HTML, CSS, or JavaScript and familiarity with React, Svelte, Angular, or Vue.
• Experience with illustration, animation, art direction, or original visual creation.
