AI Engineer/Scientist - Staff

Location: Austin, Texas; Menlo Park, California; or Reston, Virginia, United States. Candidates must reside near Austin, TX or Reston, VA and work three days per week in the office.

What you will do

• Design and build explainability capabilities that show how models and agents produce outputs and which data, documents, tools, interactions, or mechanisms influenced them.
• Build contestability features that capture challenges and corrective feedback to improve AI systems over time.
• Develop solutions for hallucination detection and mitigation and continual-learning agents.
• Translate research literature into prototypes and production-grade features across model development, inference, deployment, and monitoring.
• Partner with product, design, and customer-facing teams to integrate explainability into real workflows.
• Use AI coding assistants within a modern engineering workflow while maintaining code quality and technical judgment.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in AI engineering and/or AI research or equivalent relevant experience.
• Strong background in machine learning and modern AI systems, including LLMs, VLMs, agent frameworks, RAG, or related applied ML systems.
• Ability to work across research and engineering, including production-grade coding and experimentation based on current research.
• Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals, including testing, code review, CI/CD, debugging, and performance analysis.
• Experience designing experiments, evaluating ambiguous technical tradeoffs, and collaborating with technical and non-technical partners.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain required U.S. government authorizations.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in computer science, machine learning, AI, statistics, or a related field.
• Experience with explainable and interpretable AI, including LIME, SHAP, example- or influence-based attribution, or mechanistic interpretability.
• Research contributions such as publications, patents, open-source work, or research that influenced shipped systems.
• Experience with inference and serving stacks, Kubernetes, GitOps, GPU workloads, vector databases, RAG architectures, and model evaluation pipelines.
• Experience optimizing serving latency, throughput, batching, caching, memory efficiency, quantization, and cost/performance.
