TL;DR
Postdoc in Monitoring of Thermally Induced Seismic Events (Geothermal Energy): Characterising thermally induced seismicity in geothermal energy extraction through laboratory experiments, geophysical field monitoring, and numerical reservoir modelling with an accent on centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events. Focus on developing inversion strategies for sparse seismic data, analysing volumetric moment-tensor components, and linking observations quantitatively to geothermal-induction theory.
Location: Netherlands, with work at and collaboration with KNMI in De Bilt.
Salary: €3,706–€5,760 per month under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
Company
is an international technical university conducting research and education in engineering, applied earth sciences, energy, climate, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and smart mobility.
What you will do
- Perform centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events below magnitude 1 in the Groningen area.
- Develop inversion strategies suited to small events and sparse seismic data from geothermal projects.
- Analyse low-magnitude induced events, focusing on the volumetric component of the moment tensor.
- Link inversion results quantitatively to the behaviour predicted by geothermal-induction theory.
- Collaborate with KNMI and two postdoctoral researchers working on experimental thermo-mechanics and reservoir modelling.
Requirements
- PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience connecting models with field data.
- Solid understanding of seismic wave fields and their mechanics.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary research team.
- Excellent written and verbal English, including the ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Nice to have
- Experience with seismic processing and inversion.
- Experience with finite-difference wave-equation solvers such as SeisSol or SPECFEM3D.
- Interest in advancing geothermal energy.
Culture & Benefits
- Two-year temporary postdoctoral contract funded by NWO.
- 32–40 hours per week, with a flexible working week.
- Excellent pension scheme through ABP and supplemental health-insurance discounts.
- Annual leave entitlement of 232 hours at 38 hours per week, with options to buy or sell additional leave.
- Education, training, courses, partially paid parental leave, and a vitality programme.
- Relocation support for moving to the Netherlands, including settlement events and a dual-career programme for accompanying partners.
Hiring process
- Apply online by 30 September 2026 with a CV and motivation letter.
- Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
- A knowledge-security risk assessment takes place during the final recruitment stages.
