Staff Machine Learning Engineer (Personalization)

Location: Mountain View, United States

Base salary: $152,000–$277,000 per year, depending on market location, knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

• Design features and large-scale machine learning systems for ad targeting, search relevance, ranking, engagement, and personalized product discovery.
• Build search ranking, semantic retrieval, query understanding, and recommendation solutions using transformer models, contrastive learning, vector search, LLMs, embeddings, and multimodal learning.
• Process billions of user interaction records and petabytes of logs into reusable data objects for engineering and data science teams.
• Build and optimize scalable ML pipelines with Apache Spark, Airflow, Kubeflow, and MLflow.
• Serve complex machine learning models in real time, define performance metrics, and identify opportunities to improve customer and business outcomes.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and data science teams while mentoring engineers and promoting technical excellence.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
• 4+ years of professional experience in applied machine learning.
• Experience with machine learning, deep learning, statistical modeling, and production-grade ML systems.
• Proficiency in Python and/or Java.
• Experience with search systems, information retrieval, recommendation engines, LLMs, embeddings, or vector search is relevant to the role.
• Ability to lead cross-functional work, communicate complex technical concepts, work independently, and manage ambiguity.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical field.
• Experience with AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Vertex AI, BigQuery, or SageMaker.
• Hands-on experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Keras, XGBoost, LightGBM, or H2O.ai.
• Experience with MLflow, Kubeflow, Weights & Biases, or Amazon SageMaker.
• Experience in startup or high-growth environments and multicultural global organizations.
