TL;DR
Body Department Welding Engineer (Automotive Manufacturing): Operating and improving automated body shop welding and joining systems with an accent on equipment integration, process control, safety, and quality. Focus on designing, programming, commissioning, validating, and launching robotic welding systems, analyzing joining performance, and solving production and equipment issues.

Location: Onsite in Kansas City, Kansas, United States; regular presence in the body department and plant floor is required. Shift rotation, weekends, shutdown, or extended-hours support may be required, with travel to suppliers or other GM locations based on business needs.

What you will do

  • Operate, improve, and provide technical leadership for automated body shop welding and joining equipment and systems.
  • Identify root causes of welding and joining issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Lead or support the design, programming, integration, installation, commissioning, validation, and launch of new or modified body equipment.
  • Develop predictive and preventive maintenance activities and coordinate equipment installation and validation.
  • Review weld monitoring, teardown, and process-control data; analyze performance trends and implement countermeasures.
  • Maintain welding and joining documentation, process-control records, certifications, databases, and engineering standards while supporting quality, warranty, cost, throughput, and safety initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgy, or equivalent experience.
  • Training in mechanics, vibrations, fluid dynamics, physics, metallurgy, electricity, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Training in computer and robotic applications.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong communication, organization, project-management, and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities autonomously.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and continuous improvement.

Nice to have

  • Automotive manufacturing or body shop experience.
  • Experience with Fanuc robotics systems and automated robotic manufacturing controls.
  • Experience with equipment commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or production launches.
  • Knowledge of resistance spot welding, projection welding, drawn arc welding and brazing, mechanical joining, sealer and adhesive dispensing, laser welding, or laser brazing.
