Backend/PHP Engineer (PHP)

Location: Remote, anywhere in Spain or the UK. Candidates must reside in and be fully eligible to work in the UK for the UK salary range.

Salary: £74,800–£107,500 per year in the UK, with location-based ranges used for offers.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain robust backend services handling high-volume global traffic.
• Build functional APIs and optimize database queries for a reliable user experience.
• Contribute to modular, resilient, service-oriented architecture.
• Write maintainable PHP code using SOLID principles, OOP practices, and design patterns.
• Debug issues across the stack and integrate queues and basic event-driven processes.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and product teams to deliver technical solutions.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of professional backend development experience with PHP.
• Production experience with Laravel or strong Symfony experience with readiness to transition to Laravel.
• Strong understanding of OOP, interfaces, code modularity, and clean code.
• Solid SQL knowledge, including indexing, migrations, and query optimization.
• Experience with Docker, basic CI/CD troubleshooting, and unit and feature testing.
• Fluent English is required for communication in meetings and asynchronously.

Nice to have

• Experience with Redis or Memcached and AWS.
• Experience with SaaS or travel technology products.
• Experience with eSIM or GSMA technologies.
• Interest in distributed systems and horizontal scaling.
• Ability to use AI tools effectively for prompting, validation, and iterative technical work.
