Senior Backend Engineer (Rust/Python)

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate core Rust services for transactional storage and low-latency retrieval at the scale of hundreds of billions of objects.
• Own features end-to-end, from technical design and implementation to testing, deployment, and production observability.
• Evolve the Python userland transform framework and support cross-company engineering teams through code reviews and API design.
• Lead cross-functional projects with ML, search, and data teams to define roadmaps that balance scalability, performance, and cost.
• Drive performance and cost-efficiency across the stack, including query execution, file layouts, and database tuning.
• Strengthen platform governance capabilities, including data lineage, access controls, and deletion propagation.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend, distributed, or data-intensive systems.
• Production experience with Rust and strong proficiency in Python.
• Deep understanding of storage fundamentals: object storage (S3), columnar formats (Parquet/Arrow), and relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL).
• Proven track record of designing and operating high-throughput, low-latency services and production debugging.
• Must have primary residence in or near specific metro areas in the US, Canada, or Mexico to support occasional in-person attendance.
• Experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code workflows like Terraform.

Nice to have

• Direct experience with Apache DataFusion, arrow-rs, or building database internals.
• Contributions to the open-source Rust data ecosystem.
• Experience with data governance at scale (GDPR, lineage, access control).
• FinOps mindset and experience building developer platforms.
• Hands-on experience with agentic AI engineering practices.
