Staff Multiphysics Modeler (Fusion Energy)

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; Workplace: On-site. The role supports fuel cycle development for the ARC fusion power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia and requires occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work.

What you will do

• Lead development of an integrated power plant fuel cycle model, including unit operations and multi-effects in components.
• Develop simulation tools and workflows integrating first-principles multiphysics simulations with industrial process models for fuel cycle technologies.
• Own, validate, and improve fuel cycle simulation tools and models, identifying R&D requirements where validation data or literature is limited.
• Collaborate with internal and external experts to deliver feasible, economic, and state-of-the-art fuel cycle models.
• Develop fueling subsystem block processes and layouts, work plans, milestones, and standard engineering documentation.
• Guide colleagues in using modeling tools and outputs and influence the fuel cycle modeling strategy.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or similar experience in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, physical chemistry, or a similar discipline, with 10+ years of experience.
• 10+ years of experience modeling process systems and 10+ years of experience in computer programming.
• Expertise in transport phenomena and chemical processes in gases, including demonstrated experience building integrated process models.
• Demonstrated ability to apply first-principles approaches to complex engineering problems and conduct cost-benefit analyses for proposed solutions.
• Proven ability to work as an expert across teams to evangelize and deliver shared solutions.
• Experience building and managing large data sets, understanding scalable simulations, using version control, and performing data reduction and results analysis.
• Demonstrated success delivering effective solutions to complex problems in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform sitting, typing, standing, stooping, or climbing for extended periods.
• Dedication to safety when working around industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

• Experience with Python and/or Matlab.
• Experience with multiphysics tools such as Comsol and process simulators such as HYSYS.
• Use of engineering management tools, Confluence, JIRA, and remote collaboration tools.
• Fusion energy experience, chemical engineering experience, and atom or molecular mass transport experience.
