Machine Learning Scientist, Pretraining

Location: Emeryville, California, United States; hybrid with 2–3 days on-site

Hiring salary range: $200,000–$330,000 USD per year, plus equity participation.

What you will do

• Design and develop autoregressive, diffusion, and representation learning models for protein design.
• Apply and improve pretraining techniques from other domains for biomolecular deep learning.
• Architect, implement, and optimize infrastructure for pretraining protein language models.
• Curate datasets and design rigorous evaluation tasks for generative models.
• Analyze computational approaches and present research findings in regular updates.
• Collaborate across machine learning, computational science, experimental biology, and protein design teams.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent industry experience in computer science, machine learning, natural language processing, applied mathematics, computational biology, statistics, or a related field.
• Experience conceiving, implementing, and evaluating novel machine learning and pretraining methods for large-scale models in the biomolecular domain.
• Publications at major machine learning conferences or scientific journals, or experience pretraining large language models at frontier AI/ML labs.
• Experience with modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States is required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of protein and nucleic acid biology.
• Experience developing protein language models, structure prediction, or protein design systems.
• Experience with GCP, AWS, Azure, or OCI.
• Experience extracting and curating bioinformatics datasets.
• Familiarity with wet-lab assays and their limitations.
