TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer (Space and Defense): Leading mechanical design for space and defense hardware from system architecture through manufacturing, integration, testing, and redesign with an accent on hands-on engineering, manufacturability, reliability, and system-level tradeoffs. Focus on making technical decisions under ambiguous requirements, accelerating the design-build-test loop, and diagnosing hardware failures through iterative testing.

Location: Torrance, California, United States; onsite five days per week. Offsite integration and test travel is expected based on program needs, with increased travel during critical test campaigns. Typical hours are Monday to Friday, approximately 9:00am to 6:00pm, with flexibility based on mission schedules.

Annual base salary: $155,000–$200,000 USD, plus potential stock options and company benefits.

Company

hirify.global is a vertically integrated space and defense company developing hardware for low-Earth-orbit missions, including satellite buses, in-orbit servicing robotics, and mission systems.

What you will do

  • Lead mechanical design across projects from system architecture and trade studies through detailed design, fabrication, integration, and testing.
  • Make technical decisions under ambiguous requirements while balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability, schedule, and cost.
  • Design hardware directly in CAD and support fabrication, assembly, testing, failure diagnosis, and rapid iteration.
  • Accelerate the design-build-test cycle by moving efficiently toward hardware and useful test data.
  • Lead design reviews and provide technical direction to other mechanical engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience developing complex hardware.
  • Strong technical judgment and experience making sound design decisions with incomplete information.
  • Experience taking hardware from concept through design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and iteration.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical design, GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, structural analysis, and system-level tradeoffs.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or otherwise meet U.S. work authorization and ITAR eligibility requirements; the role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work across electrical, mechanical, software, manufacturing, integration, and test disciplines in an in-house hardware environment.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage with 100% company-paid employee premiums and 90% dependent coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with company matching up to 3.5%.
  • Stock option eligibility depending on the role.
  • Relocation support is available for qualifying positions.
  • Paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, office snacks and drinks, and regular team events.
