TL;DR
Embedded Firmware Engineer (C/C++): Designing and deploying resource-constrained firmware for livestock collars with an accent on FreeRTOS, wireless communication, and hardware-level reliability. Focus on signal processing, mesh timing synchronization, field debugging, and production support across a live fleet.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand; on-site with office-first daily attendance as the default
Company
develops connected livestock collars and software that help farmers run more productive and sustainable grazing operations.
What you will do
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and support embedded C/C++ firmware for resource-constrained livestock collars running FreeRTOS.
- Build and maintain communication systems using LoRa mesh networking, cellular connectivity, BLE, CoAP, OSCORE, and protobuf.
- Develop signal-processing, timing, synchronization, filtering, and estimation algorithms for sensor and distributed-device systems.
- Debug intermittent field issues using logs, telemetry, and system-level root-cause analysis.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers on sensors, radios, power circuitry, and analog and digital interfaces.
- Improve platform quality, tooling, reliability, and engineering practices while mentoring other engineers through design reviews and code reviews.
Requirements
- Professional experience designing and delivering firmware for resource-constrained embedded devices.
- Strong C/C++ fundamentals and experience with interrupts, memory constraints, real-time behavior, and concurrency.
- Background in mathematics, physics, or equivalent practical depth, with the ability to reason about timing, signal behavior, probability, or control systems.
- Experience with wireless or networked communication systems such as LoRa, BLE, cellular, or mesh networking.
- Strong ownership, root-cause debugging skills, and comfort solving complex low-level hardware problems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and give and receive feedback.
Nice to have
- Experience with RTOS internals, scheduling, priorities, and timing guarantees.
- Experience with GPS/GNSS, time synchronization, or distributed systems requiring tight coordination across nodes.
- Background in signal processing, control theory, estimation, filtering, or applied statistics.
- Experience with LTE-M, NB-IoT, eSIM, or similar low-power IoT technologies.
- Curiosity about farming, animal welfare, or outdoor hardware operating unattended on live animals.
Culture & Benefits
- Work on technology intended to transform grazing and improve farm sustainability.
- Office-first, high-trust culture focused on in-person collaboration, learning, and strong working relationships.
- Health insurance through Southern Cross, wellness leave, and unlimited paid annual leave.
- Six months of fully paid primary caregiver leave and four weeks of fully paid secondary caregiver leave.
- Annual $1,000 personal development budget, snacks and drinks, salary and benefits package, and employee stock ownership plan.
- Inclusive workplace committed to diversity and meaningful work.
Hiring process
- Submit a cover letter explaining interest in the role and together with a CV.
