TL;DR
Engineering Manager (IoT): Leading the wireless network engineering team that keeps more than one million farm devices connected across LoRa, cellular, and satellite networks with an accent on RF planning, remote infrastructure automation, and network reliability. Focus on shaping connectivity architecture, scaling tower deployment, solving coverage problems in harsh terrain, and developing engineers while staying close to the technical work.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand; on-site
Company
develops hardware, software, and AI systems that help farmers and graziers operate more productive and sustainable farms through connected livestock management.
What you will do
- Lead and grow a wireless network engineering team through mentoring, feedback, performance conversations, hiring, and career development.
- Own the architecture, reliability, scalability, and delivery of collar-to-tower-to-cloud connectivity across LoRa, cellular, and satellite direct-to-device networks.
- Plan coverage and tower deployments using RF engineering, site selection, link budgets, path loss modelling, antenna selection, and spectrum strategy.
- Run remote tower infrastructure through zero-touch provisioning, configuration automation, diagnostics, and fleet tooling.
- Own network uptime, incident response, and sustainable on-call practices for a 24/7 physical network.
- Collaborate with firmware, backend, hardware, and field operations teams, develop farm-domain knowledge, and identify opportunities to use AI tools in engineering.
Requirements
- Direct experience leading engineers, including mentoring, hiring, and performance management.
- Strong wireless networking fundamentals, including spectrum allocation, path loss, link budgets, and antenna behaviour.
- Hands-on experience deploying LoRa, LoRaWAN, cellular, or other long-range wireless technologies at scale.
- Experience with platform infrastructure, configuration management such as Ansible, fleet automation, and reliable operation of thousands of remote devices.
- Ability to work in Go, Python, or C++ sufficiently to review tooling, investigate data, and maintain strong technical judgement.
- Experience working in fast-moving startups and ambiguous problem spaces, with a calm, low-ego approach to complex incidents and delivery.
