Lead Data Engineer

Location: Any UK office hub: Bristol, London, Manchester, or Swansea. Part-time remote working is available for staff, but the role is tied to a UK office hub. Successful candidates must be eligible for SC security clearance, including 5 years of continuous UK residency and a 5-year employment history or education record.

Salary: £80,000–£96,000 per year

What you will do

• Define and implement cloud-native data strategies with a security-first approach.
• Design and deliver scalable data storage, transformation, and pipeline solutions.
• Advise public sector stakeholders on AWS, Azure, and GCP data approaches.
• Deploy and operate data platforms across environments, including infrastructure, monitoring, logging, and vulnerability checks.
• Translate ambiguous user and client needs into clear technical solutions within multidisciplinary agile teams.
• Mentor engineers, contribute to recruitment and line management, and share knowledge across the data practice.

Requirements

• Experience delivering at least one production-ready data platform.
• Proficiency in Python and one or more major cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience building large-scale data transformation workflows, data lakes, warehouses, lakehouses, and unified schemas.
• Knowledge of serverless and batch ETL pipelines, databases, orchestration, storage formats such as JSON and Parquet, and containerisation.
• Experience with DevOps and DataOps, including Terraform-based infrastructure as code, CI/CD, testing, deployment, and operational monitoring.
• Eligibility for UK SC security clearance is required; this normally requires 5 years of continuous UK residency and a 5-year employment history or education record.

Nice to have

• Experience with Apache Spark or equivalent cloud-native analytics frameworks.
• Experience working with financial or geospatial data platforms.
• Public sector experience, including cross-government data sharing.
• Experience transitioning machine learning models into production with data science teams.
• Experience with pair programming and multidisciplinary digital teams.
