Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid work from Rijeka or Zagreb, Croatia; flexible hours and remote work are also available.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate backend architecture for AI-augmented consulting and agent platforms.
• Make decisions on microservices, containerization, serverless architecture, and cloud services across AWS and Azure.
• Build integrations with LLM providers, vector stores, orchestration frameworks, and retrieval pipelines.
• Establish AI-assisted development guardrails, evaluation harnesses, security checks, and engineering metrics.
• Implement authentication, authorization, secrets management, data protection, and compliance controls.
• Maintain observability, diagnose performance bottlenecks, support production reliability, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale backend systems in cloud environments.
• Strong proficiency in Python and/or a major backend language or framework such as FastAPI, Django, Java/Spring Boot, or Node.js.
• Experience with microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven and serverless architectures.
• Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, relational and NoSQL databases, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Daily hands-on use of AI-assisted developer tools and experience reviewing AI-generated code rigorously.
• Experience integrating LLMs, machine learning models, agent frameworks, and evaluation tooling into backend services.

Nice to have

• Production experience with both AWS and Azure.
• Familiarity with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR compliance standards.
• Consulting or professional services experience.
• Experience working in distributed teams across multiple time zones.
