Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Croatia; hybrid work from the Rijeka or Zagreb locations for employment contracts. Remote work and flexible working hours are also offered.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate backend architecture for AI-augmented consulting and internal agent platforms.
• Make decisions on microservices, containers, serverless systems, and cloud services across AWS and Azure.
• Integrate open-source backend frameworks, LLM providers, vector stores, orchestration frameworks, and retrieval pipelines.
• Build AI-assisted development guardrails, evaluation harnesses, security checks, and policy controls.
• Implement security, compliance, observability, logging, tracing, metrics, and alerting for production systems.
• Collaborate with product, DevOps, frontend, AI, data science, and consulting teams while mentoring engineers across multiple countries.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale backend systems in AWS and/or Azure cloud environments.
• Strong proficiency in Python and/or a major backend language or framework such as FastAPI, Django, Java/Spring Boot, or Node.js.
• Experience with microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven and serverless architectures.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, relational and NoSQL databases, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Daily hands-on use of AI-assisted developer tools, including coding agents, AI code review, and AI-driven test generation.
• Experience integrating LLMs, machine learning models, agent frameworks, and evaluation tooling into backend services.

Nice to have

• Production experience with both AWS and Azure.
• Knowledge of SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR requirements.
• Experience in consulting or professional services environments.
• Experience working in distributed teams across multiple time zones.
