Research Engineer (Autonomous Drones)

hirify.global is a research and education institution hosting the Drone Transport Initiative, a collaboration focused on improving healthcare access in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities through drone technology.

What you will do

• Develop analytical models, automated flight-planning algorithms, and control software for long-range drone operations.
• Design and implement autopilot and flight-control systems across multiple drone platforms.
• Integrate algorithms with onboard edge-computing devices, teleoperation systems, and GPS modules.
• Develop and modify embedded C/C++ flight-control software using ROS, ROS2, or similar platforms.
• Conduct calibration, verification, validation, experiments, and flight testing while analyzing performance and safety data.
• Prepare regulatory filings, technical and scientific reports, publications, and progress updates, and provide technical guidance to collaborators and trainees.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science.
• At least three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with flight testing, field testing, prototype systems, or systems engineering.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with faculty, students, industry partners, regulators, community organizations, and health-system partners.
• Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives and developing knowledge and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice to have

• PhD in mechanical, electrical, robotics, or aerospace engineering.
• Familiarity with ROS or ROS2.
• Experience with software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
