Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Base pay range: CAD 141,900–212,900 per year

What you will do

• Define and evolve backend architecture for highly available, scalable mobile and web applications.
• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate reliable backend services and GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Design data models and storage strategies across relational, non-relational, caching, and event-driven systems.
• Drive performance optimization, observability, monitoring, service reliability, and incident response practices.
• Establish coding standards, testing strategies, deployment patterns, and infrastructure practices.
• Partner with product managers, designers, client engineers, security, privacy, and platform teams; mentor backend engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience building and operating backend services in production.
• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficiency in server-side development, preferably Node and TypeScript.
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including data modeling, indexing, transactions, and performance optimization.
• Experience with caching, message queues, event streams, asynchronous processing, containerized services, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
• Hands-on experience operating production systems on AWS, including compute, storage, networking, databases, and IAM.

Nice to have

• Experience building social, community, gaming, or other consumer products.
• Knowledge of real-time communication systems, messaging, presence, notifications, and activity feeds.
• Experience with social graphs, recommendation systems, content discovery, personalization, trust and safety, or content moderation.
• Early-stage startup or zero-to-one product experience.
