Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Node.js)

Location: Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; hybrid working policy applies

Salary: CAD 141,900–212,900 annual base pay range

What you will do

• Define and evolve backend architecture for highly available and scalable mobile and web applications.
• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate reliable backend services and GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Design data models and storage strategies across relational, non-relational, caching, and event-driven systems.
• Drive decisions around scalability, consistency, availability, latency, security, cost, observability, monitoring, and incident response.
• Establish coding standards, testing strategies, deployment patterns, and infrastructure practices.
• Partner with product managers, designers, client engineers, security, privacy, and platform teams while mentoring backend engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience building and operating backend services in production.
• BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Server-side development experience with Node.js and TypeScript, preferably with PostgreSQL.
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases, data modeling, indexing, transactions, and performance optimization.
• Experience designing and building GraphQL and REST APIs, caching systems, message queues, event streams, and asynchronous processing.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerized services, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and production systems on AWS.

Nice to have

• Experience building social, community, gaming, or other consumer products.
• Knowledge of real-time communication systems, social graphs, recommendations, personalization, or content discovery.
• Experience with trust and safety, content moderation, abuse prevention, or user reporting systems.
• Early-stage startup or zero-to-one product experience.
