Staff PHP Software Engineer (HealthTech)

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: Up to $220,000 per annum

What you will do

• Design and develop reliable web applications, backend services, and APIs using PHP and Symfony.
• Own technical solutions from initial design through development, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to scalable and distributed architecture, database design, query optimisation, and application performance.
• Develop frontend functionality with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and associated frameworks or templating technologies.
• Support reliable production releases with Kubernetes and containerised deployment processes.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, data, and AI teams; review code, mentor engineers, and support recruitment and onboarding.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial commercial PHP development.
• Strong experience with Symfony or another modern enterprise PHP framework and Doctrine or a comparable ORM.
• Strong MySQL and/or PostgreSQL knowledge, including schema design, query optimisation, and performance tuning.
• Experience designing production APIs and backend services, scalable distributed architectures, Kubernetes, and containerised applications.
• Good frontend development skills with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, plus strong knowledge of unit, integration, and functional testing.
• Experience owning technically complex systems through production, mentoring engineers, and contributing to technical decisions; a Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent background.

• Experience with React, Next.js, Stimulus, or another modern JavaScript framework.
• AWS, GCP, or comparable cloud platform experience.
• Experience with high-volume or data-intensive enterprise applications.
• Healthcare, financial services, or other regulated-industry experience.
• Advanced API design, application performance optimisation, or established-platform modernisation experience.
