Backend Engineer (Python/AI)

Location: Hybrid role based within commuting distance of the Amsterdam HQ, Netherlands

What you will do

• Design and implement scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems and infrastructure.
• Develop and maintain microservices that expose platform functionality to internal and external clients.
• Own the design and delivery of domain APIs and services, including OpenAPI specifications, implementation, testing, documentation, contracts, and SLAs.
• Improve service reliability, observability, security, and performance through metrics, logs, tracing, SLIs/SLOs, validation, rate limiting, and secure access controls.
• Collaborate with Frontend, DevOps, QA, Product, and other stakeholders on architecture, continuous delivery, and platform improvements.
• Document systems, share knowledge, and mentor junior backend engineers.

Requirements

• Proficiency in Python and experience building APIs with FastAPI and Pydantic.
• 3+ years of experience in backend engineering or a related field.
• Experience with relational databases, especially MySQL, and SQLAlchemy migrations; exposure to DynamoDB or Neo4j is relevant.
• Experience with AWS or another major cloud platform, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Experience designing API-first services, maintaining backward-compatible contracts, and implementing automated contract tests in CI.
• Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work within commuting distance of the Amsterdam office.

Nice to have

• Experience with Terraform, AWS Lambda, CloudFormation, GitHub Actions, Renovate, ruff, Poetry, and pre-commit.
• Experience with API observability, SLIs/SLOs, query optimization, pagination, idempotency, and API versioning.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and working with internal and external API consumers.
