Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (Aerospace): Designing mechanically dynamic systems, modules, and whole-engine layouts for the Symphony turbofan powering the Overture supersonic airliner with an accent on turbomachinery structures, rotordynamics, tolerances, and mechanical integration. Focus on developing assembly and disassembly plans, resolving coupled engine and aircraft system interactions, and integrating advanced manufacturing methods for gas turbine production.
Location: Centennial, Colorado, United States. ITAR/EAR eligibility is required: applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. authorizations.
Base salary: $152,500–$205,000 annually, plus potential equity, flexible PTO, and other benefits.
Company
develops the Overture supersonic airliner, the Symphony supersonic engine, and the Superpower natural gas turbine for AI data centers.
What you will do
- Own mechanical design features covering engine loads, actuation, rotordynamics, and failure scenarios.
- Develop design solutions for the Symphony turbofan and support its propulsion-system integration with Overture.
- Interpret, define, and review drawing tolerances and features using physical layouts, 2D sections, 3D models, and tolerance stack-ups.
- Build whole-engine models incorporating structures, rotors, ducts, service routing, actuation, secondary air systems, and thermal management.
- Lead cross-discipline integration and act as the technical owner for fits, seals, mounts, joints, and other mechanical components.
- Develop assembly and disassembly plans for development and production, with opportunities to support fabrication and testing.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
- 15+ years of professional engineering experience and leadership experience designing turbomachinery modules and parts across program phases.
- Expert-level experience with CAD systems such as 3DX, CATIA, or NX.
- Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with gas turbine manufacturing methods, including single-crystal casting, hollow-core fan blades, linear friction welding, and additive manufacturing.
- Ability to analyze and communicate coupled engine- and aircraft-level system interactions.
Nice to have
- Rig or engine testing experience and supersonic jet engine design experience.
- Part 33 commercial certification experience.
- Experience with parametric modeling, PLM/PDM, part disposition, or design tools and methods.
- Knowledge of heat transfer and structural analysis.
- Proficiency with Python or similar programming languages.
