Data Engineer

Location: On-site at a government facility in Northern Virginia, with travel to the Arlington, VA office typically 4 days per month. U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance with full-scope polygraph are required.

Base salary: $192K–$281K annually. Estimated total compensation: $281K–$455K, including target bonus and estimated equity value.

What you will do

• Design and build software extensions that retrieve, parse, transform, and load new data sources into mission-critical applications.
• Investigate unfamiliar source systems, data formats, schemas, access patterns, and performance constraints.
• Deploy and operate data integration components across low-side and high-side environments in coordination with customer and Arlington engineering teams.
• Monitor pipeline health, data quality, throughput, and freshness using Grafana, Loki, Tempo, and Mimir.
• Diagnose production failures, lead incident resolution and root cause analysis, and improve runbooks, dashboards, alerts, and platform capabilities.
• Serve as the on-site engineering presence for a government customer and relay operational feedback to product engineering and DevSecOps teams.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or software engineering with substantial data infrastructure experience.
• Strong programming ability in Python or Go, with strong SQL and schema design skills.
• Hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines and debugging production data systems.
• Experience in forward-deployed, field engineering, or embedded customer-facing engineering roles, with independent judgment and incident ownership.
• Ability to work on-site full-time at a government facility in Northern Virginia and travel to Arlington, VA.
• U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI security clearance with full-scope polygraph are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with data lakes and large-scale query technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Trino, Presto, Spark, or Athena.
• Experience with streaming and messaging technologies such as Kafka, NATS, Kinesis, or RabbitMQ.
• Experience with observability tools, air-gapped or classified environments, and containerized deployments.
• Military, intelligence, or defense contracting experience.
• Familiarity with Docker, Docker Compose, and CI/CD concepts.
