Senior Director, Functional Genomics & Organoid Systems Biology

Location: Chicago, Illinois; onsite in the Tempus lab. Hybrid and remote candidates will not be considered.

Salary: $190,000–$270,000 annually for roles performed in Illinois. Compensation may vary for California, Colorado, and New York.

What you will do

• Define the scientific strategy for functional screening and target discovery using patient-derived organoid models.
• Build and expand an organoid-based discovery platform that validates hypotheses from multimodal patient datasets.
• Oversee CRISPR knockout, activation, interference, and pooled screening campaigns.
• Lead drug sensitivity, resistance-mechanism, and combination-therapy studies across diverse organoid models.
• Develop functional assays using co-culture systems, immune components, single-cell, and spatial technologies.
• Partner with computational, clinical, molecular profiling, and translational research teams to connect experimental findings with patient outcomes.

Requirements

• PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in cancer biology, molecular biology, genetics, functional genomics, bioengineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of relevant industry or academic experience, including substantial leadership experience.
• Deep expertise in cancer biology, functional genomics, target discovery, and CRISPR-based screening.
• Hands-on experience with patient-derived organoids, ex vivo models, or clinically relevant disease models.
• Track record of translating biological insights into therapeutic hypotheses, biomarkers, or drug discovery programs.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary scientific teams, with strong communication and stakeholder-influence skills.
