Principal Software Engineer in QA (AI)

Location: Santa Clara, United States; hybrid

Salary: $180,000–$300,000 per year, plus equity and bonus opportunities.

What you will do

• Lead and mentor QA engineers in test planning, test case design, automation, debugging, and execution.
• Define test coverage strategies for software features, system integrations, and deployment scenarios with product, software, and systems teams.
• Design, implement, and maintain scalable Python and Pytest test suites for software- and system-level validation.
• Build end-to-end and regression test infrastructure integrated with Jenkins and GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
• Validate firmware, FPGAs, bootloaders, host runtime drivers, embedded architectures, PCIe interfaces, CPUs, GPUs, AI accelerators, and ML workloads.
• Drive root cause analysis, defect resolution, quality risk reviews, and communication of test status to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with 10+ years of industry experience.
• 8+ years of software development experience with strong data structures and algorithms skills.
• 8+ years developing and testing lower-layer software stacks, including FPGAs, bootloaders, and host runtime drivers.
• 5+ years of firmware design, implementation, and troubleshooting experience, plus 3+ years with embedded architectures and I/O technologies such as PCIe, GPUs, and CPUs.
• Fluent Python programming skills and the ability to write production-quality test code for complex scenarios.
• Experience debugging multi-layer hardware-software issues, working with ML frameworks and accelerator architectures, and leading or mentoring QA or test engineering teams.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of large language models, their operational characteristics, and inference stacks in hardware-software co-design.
