TL;DR

Lead, Safety Assurance (Autonomous Vehicles): Ensuring regulatory compliance and safety assurance for autonomous vehicle operations with an accent on NHTSA engagement, SGO incident reporting, and federal and state safety frameworks. Focus on evaluating compliance gaps, preparing defensible regulatory submissions, and advising Safety and Legal leadership on high-stakes operational risks.

Location: Remote within the United States; minimal travel required, approximately 1%–10%.

Salary: $140,000–$200,000 USD

hirify.global is an autonomous vehicle company developing and deploying AV technology to improve public transit access, safety, and urban mobility.

What you will do

  • Review, quality-assure, and approve SGO incident narratives and safety-related regulatory submissions.
  • Monitor NHTSA, federal, and state regulatory developments, enforcement trends, guidance, and proposed rulemakings.
  • Assess internal safety policies and standards against FMVSS, NHTSA frameworks, SAE standards, and other applicable requirements.
  • Build and maintain compliance documentation, including regulatory summaries, gap analyses, submission records, and engagement materials.
  • Advise Safety and Legal leadership on safety cases, incident response, operational risks, and regulatory strategy.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and support engagements with NHTSA, state DOTs, federal agencies, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in AV safety regulation, incident management, or safety compliance at NHTSA, a federal agency, or an AV/automotive company.
  • Deep familiarity with NHTSA Standing General Order reporting requirements and crash investigation processes.
  • Hands-on experience with FMVSS, NHTSA exemption frameworks, and SAE ADS taxonomy.
  • Experience preparing regulatory submissions, safety correspondence, and compliance documentation.
  • Experience working with legal counsel on regulatory matters and strategy.
  • Exceptional written communication, independent judgment, and the ability to translate technical safety content into defensible regulatory language.

Nice to have

  • Experience at NHTSA's Office of Automation Safety, Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance, or an equivalent federal safety office.
  • Background in crash reconstruction, forensic engineering, or ADS safety case evaluation.
  • Experience briefing executives on incident trends and regulatory strategy.
  • Graduate degree in mechanical engineering, safety engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience managing safety-critical issues in cross-functional teams.
