TL;DR

Scientific Database Curator (Structural Biology): Integrating, curating, and maintaining protein structure information in UniProt with an accent on structural biology, biocuration, and bioinformatics. Focus on connecting experimental and predicted structures with protein annotations, developing data pipelines, and coordinating structural data integration across release cycles.

Location: Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, UK; hybrid working arrangements available. International applicants are welcome, with visa exemptions and relocation support available for eligible candidates.

Salary: £3,202.52 per month after tax for grade 4 or £3,452.05 per month after tax for grade 5, depending on qualification level.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain pipelines connecting UniProt with the PDB, AlphaFold DB, and the 3D-Beacons Network.
  • Lead the integration of protein structure information into UniProt and coordinate data exchange with collaborators.
  • Curate UniProt protein entries, prioritising newly available and biologically important structures.
  • Collaborate with UniProt curation and development teams, the UniProt Consortium, PDBe, and other structural biology partners.
  • Contribute to UniProt training, communication, and hirify.global-EBI-wide scientific activities, including AI-assisted biocuration initiatives.

Requirements

  • PhD or MSc in structural biology or a related life science discipline.
  • Strong understanding of structural biology and ability to interpret complex scientific literature.
  • Experience or familiarity with structured data, biological databases, bioinformatics resources, and bioinformatic analyses.
  • Strong organisational, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international team.
  • Excellent English language skills and a strong interest in the intelligent use of AI.

Nice to have

  • Experience with biocuration or biological database annotation.
  • Experience with ontologies and controlled vocabularies such as Gene Ontology.
  • Experience using bioinformatics tools or scripting languages such as Python or R.
  • Experience with text mining, natural language processing, or AI-assisted literature analysis.
  • Experience collaborating in international scientific projects or consortia.
