Payroll Team Leader – Spain Payroll (Payroll Operations): Delivering accurate, compliant Spain payroll operations from Costa Rica with an accent on service delivery, process control, confidentiality, and team performance. Focus on resolving complex payroll issues, implementing automation and regulatory updates, managing audits and controls, and leading payroll process improvements across multiple markets.
Location: Hybrid in Escazú, Costa Rica

is a global pharmaceutical company with a People Experience and Global Business Services organization supporting payroll and colleague services.
What you will do
- Manage daily payroll operations and ensure timely, accurate completion of payroll-cycle, annual, and year-end activities.
- Prepare stakeholder reports, monitor payroll metrics and KPIs, and resolve complex payroll and colleague issues.
- Maintain payroll controls, signoffs, documentation, audit support, and compliance with regulatory and company standards, including SOX controls.
- Implement payroll best practices, regulatory updates, process improvements, automation opportunities, and transformational initiatives.
- Coordinate with Finance, People Experience, payroll vendors, and other stakeholders on payroll-related matters across multiple markets.
- Lead, coach, train, and develop payroll team members while managing performance, escalations, and cross-functional initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of payroll experience, including extensive Spain payroll experience.
- In-depth knowledge of payroll calculation, processing, taxation, global payroll practices, and compliance.
- Experience leading a team and working cross-functionally, with strong problem-solving, communication, accuracy, and confidentiality skills.
- Effective spoken and written English communication is required.
Nice to have
- Master’s degree in business or a related field.
- International or multi-state payroll experience; Colombian payroll experience is valuable.
- Experience with Works Council, union, or collective bargaining payroll processes.
- Experience with Workday, Dayforce, ADP, ServiceNow, SAP, or payroll and time-and-attendance systems.
- Certified Payroll Professional, Lean Six Sigma, or similar certification; knowledge of GDPR and local labor laws.
