Senior Frontend Engineer (Accessibility)

Canva is building a design platform focused on making design creation and the resulting designs accessible to everyone.

What you will do

• Design and build accessible interactions in the Editor, including focus management, keyboard navigation, live regions, and accurate ARIA roles and states.
• Use VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS as daily development tools to test, debug, and validate assistive technology interactions.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers across the Editing Group to review designs and pull requests and resolve accessibility issues before release.
• Identify systemic accessibility gaps and develop architectural solutions for complex, interconnected Editor components.
• Help make collaborative editing, rich-text editing, and canvas-based experiences accessible to people using screen readers and other assistive technologies.

Requirements

• Commercial experience building accessible web applications and applying WCAG in practice.
• Hands-on experience developing with screen readers, including understanding the technical differences and quirks of VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS.
• Experience working effectively in a large, interconnected frontend codebase.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React.
• Clear communication across engineering, design, product, and accessibility disciplines.

Nice to have

• Experience with WAI-ARIA authoring patterns for complex widgets such as trees, grids, drag-and-drop interactions, and dialogs.
• Experience with streaming or real-time UI accessibility, HTML5 canvas, data visualisation, spreadsheets, or WYSIWYG editors.
• Familiarity with browser and native accessibility APIs, accessibility trees, and platform-specific behaviours.
• Experience building accessibility features using AI or supporting mobile accessibility with React Native.
• Experience working with accessibility specialists, assistive technology users, or accessibility-focused user researchers.
