Cable Design & Specification Engineer (Cable Manufacturing)

Location: Willimantic, Connecticut, United States; office-based role with occasional travel when necessary.

Global manufacturer of energy and telecommunications cable systems, including power cables, optical fibers, copper cables, and connectivity products.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain cable designs, specifications, drawings, data sheets, bills of materials, and manufacturing routings.
• Translate customer requirements, industry standards, and technical specifications into manufacturable cable solutions.
• Generate cost models, analyze cost drivers, and support quotations and commercial benchmarking.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, commercial teams, and plant stakeholders on capability, manufacturability, throughput, quality, and product consistency.
• Maintain design systems, technical instructions, SOPs, and product data integrity while ensuring compliance with UL, CSA, ICEA, and other standards.
• Support new product development, compound implementation, experimental trials, technical documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 2–4 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, and specification interpretation skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with operators, engineers, product managers, and leadership and work independently across functions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access; experience with ERP or database systems is preferred.
• Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced office and manufacturing environment and lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds as needed.

Nice to have

• Programming knowledge, particularly Java, for working with design-system back ends.
• Specification engineering experience involving complex industry, customer, and internal requirements.
• Experience resolving specification deviations and assessing compliance with standards and customer requirements.
• Leadership experience or interest in developing into a leadership role.
