Software Engineer (Bioinformatics)

TL;DR

Software Engineer (Bioinformatics): Developing and scaling a text search engine for biological data resources with an accent on indexing 6 billion data objects and RESTful APIs. Focus on integrating AI technologies to enhance data discovery and building efficient cross-domain data integration approaches.

Location: Hybrid: Must be based in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire (UK). Team days on-site are Mondays and Tuesdays.

Salary: Monthly from £3,303 to £3,695 (after tax)

What you will do

• Integrate and index biological data and metadata to provide user-friendly web interfaces and services for the research community.
• Develop new features within the established codebase of the EBI Search platform.
• Integrate the search platform with emerging AI technologies to improve data discovery and user experience.
• Develop lightweight and efficient approaches for integrating data from multiple biological domains.
• Collaborate with colleagues applying industry-standard best practices to create reusable and well-documented software.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in software development.
• Strong knowledge of Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and Bash.
• Familiarity with version control systems, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
• Must be based in the UK or eligible for visa exemption/sponsorship provided by hirify.global.

Nice to have

• Experience with Solr, Lucene, or Lucene-based search technologies.
• Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, relational databases, graph databases, or NoSQL systems.
• Experience in biomolecular or biomedical data and metadata integration.
• Experience with machine learning approaches for data discovery.
