TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer (Machine Learning): Building ML and reinforcement learning models and production pipelines that simulate road users for autonomous vehicle testing and training, with an accent on generative AI, sequence prediction, and high-performance infrastructure. Focus on designing scalable training loops, profiling CPU/GPU workloads, integrating perception and prediction models, and deploying reliable systems for real-world AV environments.

Location: Remote with hybrid requirements. Candidates living within a 50-mile radius of Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, or Mountain View must report to the applicable location at least three times per week. This role is categorized as hybrid and requires regular onsite attendance for candidates near the listed locations.

Salary: $144,700–$284,100 per year, plus bonus potential.

What you will do

  • Develop machine learning and reinforcement learning models that simulate vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users for autonomous vehicle testing and training.
  • Build and optimize model training loops, ML infrastructure, metrics, and data pipelines for production deployment and rapid experimentation.
  • Integrate ML systems with simulation and collaborate with Behaviors, Perception, and Safety engineering groups.
  • Contribute strong software engineering expertise using modern C++ or Python.
  • Support autonomous driving initiatives including Autopilot, Lane Keep, and other AV technologies.
  • Design scalable, efficient, fault-tolerant, and extensible systems while contributing to technical strategy and mentorship.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience in robotics or latency-sensitive backend services.
  • Experience working with machine learning teams, algorithms, classification, reinforcement learning, and sequence prediction models.
  • Strong programming skills in modern C++ or Python.
  • Experience building high-performance ML and systems pipelines, with familiarity with TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Experience profiling CPU or GPU software, process scheduling, and prioritization.
  • Must be able to work under the role's US employment and location requirements; GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Experience in simulation, robotics, autonomous vehicles, or deploying perception, prediction, and AV models in real-world environments.
