🦄 Description
Amber is looking for a Senior Unreal Engineer to join a small, high-impact team building an Unreal Engine 5 prototype for an open-world MMO created by the team behind a highly successful game. The prototype will demonstrate key gameplay systems and high-fidelity visuals for internal alignment across design, art, and engineering teams.
This is a remote, full-time contract expected to last approximately three months with the possibility of extension. You will play a critical role in shaping gameplay systems, ensuring prototype stability, supporting rapid iteration, and helping the team make informed technical decisions.
🚀 Responsibilities
• Architect and implement core gameplay systems including 3Cs, resource gathering, campfire building, and combat mechanics
• Build a cosmetic character appearance system with gender and equipment swapping
• Implement a representative combat system for prototype purposes
• Develop instanced zone transitions connecting multiple biomes
• Integrate environment assets, including collision, interaction triggers, and runtime behaviors
• Integrate FAB marketplace content while maintaining a clean project structure
• Implement a configurable HUD system for gameplay settings
• Collaborate closely with designers and artists on implementation details and scope
• Participate in daily reviews, identify risks, evaluate trade-offs, and maintain realistic project goals
• Ensure prototype stability while supporting frequent iteration and experimentation
📚 Required Skills
• 7+ years of professional game development experience
• Strong Unreal Engine experience with deep knowledge of UE5
• Advanced proficiency in both Blueprints and C++
• Strong understanding of character movement, input systems, collision, game architecture, and asset management
• Experience with World Partition and level loading systems
• Knowledge of rendering, AI, navigation, physics, and UI systems
• Strong debugging and profiling skills
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced prototype environment
• Excellent communication skills for discussing technical trade-offs with non-technical stakeholders
• Good written and spoken English
• Pragmatic approach to prototype development and prioritization
👍 Nice to Have
• Experience with Nanite, Lumen, PCG, and Enhanced Input
• Experience with Gameplay Ability System (GAS)
• Experience with animation blend spaces, animation blueprints, and montages
• Previous work on open-world, survival, sandbox, or MMO projects
• Experience implementing instanced dungeons or zone transitions
• Familiarity with Sequencer, camera rigs, and Take Recorder workflows
• Experience using AI coding tools such as Copilot or Cursor
• Performance-focused coding practices
