Field Biologist I

Location: Remote; duty station in the Brownsville or Del Rio areas of Texas; field work along the Texas/Mexico border and in potentially challenging terrain.

What you will do

• Monitor construction activities for adherence to established Best Management Practices along the Texas/Mexico border.
• Conduct biological surveys, construction monitoring protocols, natural community and wildlife habitat assessments, stream assessments, vegetation surveys, and other short-term field studies.
• Collect, interpret, analyze, and summarize field and desktop data for technical reports.
• Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies and obtain relevant data.
• Support environmental permitting and recommend project or procedural alternatives to minimize environmental impacts.
• Collaborate with project managers, colleagues, teaming partners, clients, natural resource specialists, and scientists; participate in environmental briefings, seminars, conferences, training sessions, and public meetings as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, botany, wildlife biology, ecology, or an equivalent field.
• Ability to accurately analyze information, make sound decisions, meet deadlines, manage concurrent projects, and adapt to shifting priorities and timelines.
• Exceptional proficiency with Microsoft Suite programs; some knowledge of statistics and database management.
• GIS experience, including ArcGIS or similar platforms.
• Technical writing and editing skills, exceptional communication skills, and strong organization and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team with a positive, flexible approach to assignments.
• Ability to pass pre-employment and post-employment drug and alcohol tests and a background check.
• Ability to travel, work outdoors independently and with other scientists, work in remote or challenging field locations, and lift 50 lbs.

Nice to have

• Master of Science degree.
• At least two years of relevant experience.
• Field experience assisting with sensitive species surveys, avian surveys, wetland delineations, vegetation monitoring, and other field assignments.
• Experience completing environmental permitting projects.
• Knowledge of rare, threatened, or endangered plants and animals in the Southwestern Region.
• Experience with specific species groups such as plants, birds, or mammals.
