What you will do

• Review and approve story pitches based on relevance, feasibility, and alignment with editorial priorities.
• Define story direction, scope, and key angles at the outset of assignments.
• Mentor writers and review drafts to determine whether additional reporting or reframing is required.
• Make final decisions about publication readiness and ensure accuracy, sourcing, and fairness.
• Contribute original story ideas and identify emerging topics worth pursuing.
• Oversee multiple stories simultaneously and maintain progress across assignments.

Requirements

• 5+ years of editorial experience in a newsroom, publication, or similar demanding environment.
• Strong track record of shaping long-form, investigative, analytical, or explanatory journalism.
• Demonstrated experience assigning stories and evaluating pitches.
• Strong editorial judgment to identify when stories need deeper reporting or sharper framing.
• Ability to guide writers from the early idea stage through to publication readiness.
• Capacity to manage multiple assignments while maintaining quality and consistency.

Nice to have

• Experience managing freelance, volunteer, or cross-functional contributors.
• Experience shaping investigative or enterprise reporting across multiple beats.
• Familiarity with multimedia or multi-platform storytelling (audio, video, or data-informed reporting).
• Experience mentoring less-experienced contributors.
• Background in nonprofit, independent, or mission-driven media environments.
