TL;DR
Data Scientist (Neural Net Forecasting) (Deep Learning/Time Series): Designing and deploying neural network forecasting models and scalable data products for large-scale retail time series with an accent on rigorous validation, robust baselines, and productionisation. Focus on building time-aware training and backtesting pipelines, controlling leakage and stability, and deploying monitored models across big data and cloud environments.
Location: Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom. The role is full-time with 36 working hours per week. Tesco uses a blended office and remote-working pattern, with offices serving as places for collaboration and innovation.
Company
develops data products and technology solutions supporting retail, online shopping, finance, supply chain, fulfilment, distribution, property, IoT, and computer vision.
What you will do
- Design and improve deep learning and machine learning forecasting models for large-scale retail time series.
- Build training and backtesting pipelines with time-aware cross-validation, leakage controls, and stability checks.
- Apply productionisation practices, including monitoring, retraining strategies, performance analysis, and cost optimisation.
- Validate, document, and present modelling processes and performance to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and business partners to deliver reliable, scalable models with measurable business value.
- Support project development, promote data science, and mentor junior team members and interns.
Requirements
- Meaningful academic or industrial experience with deep learning or related machine learning techniques for time series forecasting.
- Experience designing or modifying advanced algorithms and applying them to large datasets.
- Knowledge of neural network forecasting architectures, such as sequence models, temporal convolutional approaches, or transformer-style models.
- Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, with familiarity with software engineering practices including version control, unit testing, and CI/CD.
- Knowledge of statistics, mathematics, time series analysis, and big data or cloud technologies, with PySpark preferred.
- Ability to work from or attend the Welwyn Garden City, UK location within Tesco’s blended working pattern.
Nice to have
- Experience with probabilistic forecasting, hierarchical forecasting, or time-series representation learning.
- Project and stakeholder management experience.
- Experience training and deploying deep learning models in cloud environments, including GPU-enabled workflows.
Culture & Benefits
- Dedicated weekly time for learning and personal development, supported by learning resources and tools.
- Academic collaborations, regular knowledge-sharing events, team days, and an inclusive working culture.
- Annual bonus scheme of up to 20% of base salary.
- At least 25 days of holiday plus a personal day and bank holidays.
- Private medical insurance, virtual GP access, and an Employee Assistance Programme.
- Paid maternity, adoption, and paternity leave provisions.
