Senior Backend Engineer

TL;DR

Senior Backend Engineer (Kotlin/Kafka): Ingesting odds feeds from multiple providers, managing critical data pipelines, and ensuring seamless integration between platform parts with an accent on real-time data processing, Kafka architecture, and distributed systems. Focus on building WebSocket clients, normalizing data streams, optimizing high-volume processing, and maintaining 99.9% uptime for sports betting platform.

Location: Fully remote but must currently reside in Canada and be legally authorized to work there.

What you will do

• Own integration with sports feed data providers, build WebSocket clients for real-time odds and event data.
• Ingest and normalize data from REST APIs and streaming feeds, handle data mapping between providers.
• Design and maintain Kafka topics, consumer/producer architecture, optimize message processing for high-volume streams.
• Manage data flow between microservices, work with Redis for caching and performance.
• Maintain and extend Market Management System, build tools for product ops, implement market settlement logic.
• Ensure platform reliability with 99.9% uptime, implement monitoring with Datadog, participate in on-call rotation.

Requirements

• 5+ years backend engineering experience with production systems.
• Strong proficiency in Kotlin or Java.
• Deep understanding of Kafka (topics, consumers, producers, streaming).
• Experience with distributed systems and event-driven architecture.
• SQL and database optimization skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
• Ability to debug complex issues across multiple services, strong communication for cross-team collaboration.

Nice to have

• Experience with PHP, WebSocket implementation, Redis for caching at scale.
• Real-time data processing and normalization, Vert.x or similar reactive frameworks.
• Sports betting or gaming industry background, DevOps experience (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes), RabbitMQ, Retool.
